The Import Team Leader has a varied role and requires someone who is extremely well organized and familiar with how a business operates. Working as an Import Team Leader requires someone with an outgoing personality and capable of negotiation with external agencies and maintaining business relationships.


Job description:

  • The Import Team Leader supervises and manages a team of people, which will include organizing work schedules, the success of the team, and the individual team members.
  • You will also be responsible for recruitment and training staff.  Positioning new team members so they are using their natural talents to add the most value and contribution to the team, ultimately creating a positive environment.
  • New client set-up and implementation, hands on experience with every customer so you can train and know exactly what it takes to handle a file. 
  • The Import Team Leader's job includes being accountable for managing the department's client requirements, and understanding their business needs. 
  • You will be responsible for all client complaints and expected to be able to navigate through many difficult situations. Client care is a vital part of this role and good interpersonal skills are very important.
  • The Import Team Leader is expected to prepare reports on the performance of the department and suggest improvements that will enhance the company’s profit margins. They will also work closely with other department team leaders for the benefit of the company.
  • Maintain records for accounting purposes in accordance with company procedures, including the checking of all invoices and shipping manifests for conformity to tariff and Customs regulations.
  • The Import Team Leader negotiates with carriers, warehouse operators or distribution networks to determine tariffs which should always be in the interest of the company.
  • Monitor the department's job billing and validate updates are being made weekly.
  • Classifications, Clearance, 7501, Billing, Dispatch, Auditing.
  • Customized requirements for client, create profiles, and maintenance.
  • Action A/P exceptions develop & maintain A/P exceptions and fix repetitive errors.

Key skills:

  • The Import Team Leader is expected to develop and maintain business relationships with both customers and suppliers, therefore, you must be a good communicator and be able demonstrate strong negotiation skills.
  • Good written communications skills are also very important as well as the ability to apply critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques.
  • The Import Team Leader requires excellent time management skills and the ability to organize your own team effectively and efficiently. Being able to motivate and direct staff and identify the best people for the job.
  • You must have a sound understanding of business finance and be able to analyze and problem solve where applicable.
  • A good Import Team Leader is decisive and able to make decisions at critical times and whilst under pressure. You must be able to lead a team and be sensitive to the needs of others.

This individual should have previous outside sales experience, be self-motivated, possess excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to successfully close business transactions, achieve sales goals, develop new business, and strengthen existing customer relationships.

Job Description:

  • Build a client base by researching and seeking out prospects via sales calls.
  • Attract, develop, and maintain new business opportunities you acquire.
  • Arrange and participate in face to face sales meetings and conference calls with new and existing customers. 
  • Negotiate and prepare sales quotes to customers for our service. 
  • Achieve sales goals and meet key performance indicators set by upper management. 
  • Create sales leads and active point of contacts over the phone and in person. 
  • Maintain existing customer base while continuing to expand business.
